Never a label to follow blindly in the footsteps of others, Maison Martin Margiela‘s collaboration with Swedish retailer H&M will further distinguish itself from its predecessors with a collection of footwear. The Belgian fashion house announced earlier that the collection will consist of “re-editions” of archival classics and the shoes will follow suit — silhouettes taken from MMM’s back catalogs and reiterated for the mass consumer. Ardent fans of the label will likely recognize the 6 models that will release with the clothing — a gum-soled, high-top sneaker in white and red colorways, along with a slip-on and ankle boot that will be offered in tan, black and paint-treated versions. No longer at the helm of his eponymous fashion label though much of the world still revers at the whisper of his name, Martin Margiela. Some of it is because of Margiela’s elusive and reclusive nature (last known photo of the designer was taken in 1997) But most of the reverence is born out of Margiela’s daring interpretations and his foresights in trends, often a decade ahead. It is in this identical context you will find Hotel La Masion des Centraliens. A former home to a Viennese princess, the converted townhouse is just brief stroll away from Champs Elysées and housed an elaboration of, well, “Margiela-ness”. Liken that of a carnival mirrored fun house but for adults, nothing is what it seems to be. A mix of Rococo styling with the bare minimalism he’s famous for plus high-tech applications such as laser-etch photo decors, oddities here are in fact the normalcy and vice versa.
