Kwikset Allows Your iPhone to Unlock Your Door

20130513-222222.jpg

The mainstream adoption of the smartphone has generally meant more chance to kill/waste time, be anti-social and in some cases, simplify your life. Kwikset’s Kevo looks to perform the latter with their new integrated lock that enables users to unlock their doors via just a simple tap. There’s no need to swipe your phone over the keyhole but rather the tap instantly pairs and recognizes the authorization between the two. In addition you’re able to send temporary codes to trusted people so you can let them in without the hassle of dropping keys off and meeting up. For now the Kevo is only available for the iPhone 4S and 5. For more information head over to Kwikset.

Eames Molded Wood Chair by Herman Mill

20130416-092653.jpg

By far the most famous American Mid-Century designers, Charles and Ray Eames legacy can still be found in tastefully furnished appartments all over the world. A standout piece is without doubt the Shell Chair. Originally introduced in 1948 by Herman Miller it initially featured a molded fiber glass shell, which was later, however, replaced by a more-eco friendly yet less classy looking plastic. Now 65 years after its initial inception the Shell Chair is made available in a refined wooden veneer version, of course with your choice of three classic bases: wire (“Eiffel Tower”) in chrome or black, 4-leg in chrome or black, or wood dowel in one of three finishes.

Wall Mounted Hands by Harry Allen

Remember  the scene in Willy Wonka (the original, of course), when disembodied hands grab the visitors’ coats? Well, Harry Allen remembers. From his ongoing “Reality Series,” where real objects are re-cast in a resin composite material, these hands—cast from Allen’s own—have a multitude of functions. BESTOW comes with a candleholder as well as a glass vase. OM has fingers gently grasping a stick of incense. GRAB gives the option of hanging objects or cloths from all 5 digits. OFFER offers a small flat shelf for display. C’MERE provides an inviting finger to hang stuff fromThe latest in the series are the hands cast to hold an iPad or iPhone. These hands are waterproof and washable. LOVE!

Moncler Sofa

The Moncler puffa jacket is fast becoming a favourite, but I have to admit it’s never been considered as an sofa. French architects Gilles & Boissier have done just that. Soft, giving and generously padded, the ‘Sit on my Doudone’ truly is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man of the sofa world.

Kebo Bottle Opener

I admire simplicity, especially when it comes to opening alcoholic beverages! Which is why I like this, Kebo Bottle Opener. Based on the Theodore Low bottle opener from the ’30s, it’s cast from stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish, and allows you to open bottles with a simple squeeze of your hand — which is good, if the bottle you’re opening isn’t your first. Or fifth. Like I said, simple is better

Michael Jordan’s Home For Sale

Michael Jordan’s mansion in Highland Park has hit the market, and you’re going to have to have sell a lot of rare Air Jordans if you want to put in an offer. Listed at a cool $29 million, the compound measures over 56,000 square feet, with nine bedrooms, a three-bedroom guest house, indoor-outdoor entertaining and pool area, tennis court, putting green and 15-car garage. Needless to say, there’s an attached indoor full-sized basketball court complete with a sound system tuned to provide the right acoustics for the space.

Alexander Wang OBJECTS Collection

Next week marks Alexander Wang’s foray into the lifestyle arena with his OBJECTS Collection. The eight-piece ensemble boasts a black mock croc coaster, embossed leather lighter, letter box, junk box, playing card case, smoked glass ashtray, leather-bound notebook with metal corners and a blackened steel bike chain with a mock croc-covered brass lock. In speaking about the collection, Wang commented “I’ve always had a fascination with home, but wanted to take it step by step. If I can’t start with the couch, at least I can start with the coaster.” The OBJECTS Collection ranges from $29-$150 USD and will be available on the web on February 13.

Lamp Waaf

There’s a reason they call dogs “man’s best friend.” Unlike cats, dogs want attention all the time, wait for you to get home from work and won’t eat your eyeballs if you happen to kick the bucket. This lamp really has nothing to do with household friends, except for the fact it plays on your heart strings because it looks like a dog. It’s crafted from wood harvested at sustainably managed forests and assembled in France. It’s only a lamp (and it isn’t exactly cheap), but it still looks enough like a dog to make us want it more than anything we’ve ever seen in an IKEA catalog. Now man’s best friend can help you get real work done instead of just tearing you away from it. Yours for about 300 of our American cousins currency.

Star Wars By Evian Concept | By Mandy Brencys

If watching the complete Star Wars saga on Blu-ray has taught us anything, it’s that the classic films’ beloved characters would look great as design concepts on special bottles of Evian water. Fortunately for us, art student Mandy Brencys took the fanciful notion and made it into reality by actually designing glass bottles of Evian to resemble C-3P0, Chewbacca, R2-D2, Darth Vader and a Storm Trooper. Part of a student design project, these Evian bottles sadly won’t be coming to a store near you, nor to ones in galaxies far, far away. We just hope Mandy’s instructors at Hamburg’s Miami Ad School gave her extra points for not including any characters from the prequel trilogy.
